Journey Worker FAQ'S

Journeymen Upgrade Training is required for all Building Trades Journey Workers on Books 1 & 2 as per the Master Labor Agreement (MLA).

Recently turned-out apprentices are required to complete training based on journey worker status as of September 1st of each year. August turn-outs are required to begin JUT training the following month of the same year, September 1st.

JUT is an agreed upon working condition between Labor and Contractors in section 5.9 of the Master Labor Agreement (MLA). Consistent, documented and professional training differentiates us from labor competitors. A well trained work force recaptures market share and empowers DC16 Local Unions and Contractors to sustain a fair wage and benefits package.

The JUT year follows the Master Labor Agreement (MLA). The JUT year runs from September 1st to August 31st.

Every year, 16 JUT hours are due by August 31st. Up to 8 rollover hours are allowed from the previous JUT year.

JUT hours in excess of 8 will not roll to the next JUT year. Mark Breslin online classes and the JUT Temporary Addendum are exempt from rollover rules.

You may sign up for class on A&J Training Trust's website by clicking the Class Sign Up link in the Journey Workers menu above. Classes may also be taken through CPMCA. Click here for the CPMCA website.

A JUT credit request form may be submitted for approval of training not currently listed with A&J Training Trust or CPMCA. Click here for the JUT policy and form.

The same course(s) do not qualify for JUT credit year after year.

Exception: Certifications due to expire within the JUT year.

You may check your JUT hours at anytime on A&J Training Trust's website. For full instructions on how to check your hours please click here or go to Check My JUT Hours under the Journey Workers menu above.

New classes are frequently added to A&J Training Trust's website, so please check back regularly.

You can also submit a class request by clicking here or filling out the class request form found on the JUT Catalog, found under the Journey Workers menu above. Please note submitting a class request does not guarantee the class will be offered. Nor does it guarantee you a space in the next available class offered. Members are not automatically placed in classes by submitting a class request.

All journey worker classes have limited space and are reserved for journey workers who have previously signed up. Individuals who have not registered in the designated timeframe and show up for class will not be permitted to take the class.

According to the JUT policy, available by clicking here, the same JUT course/courses may be retaken when a certification is due to expire within that JUT year.

It may take up to 72 business hours for A&J Training Trust to process your blackboard enrollment. If it has been over 72 business hours, please reach out to the JUT Department by clicking here or selecting Contact under the About menu above.

It may take 5-10 business days for your certification to display on A&J Training Trust's website. If it has been over 10 business days, please reach out to A&J Training Trust's administrative office by clicking here or selecting Contact under the About menu above.

Depending on your certification, it may take up to four weeks for the certification to display on your A&J Training Trust profile. If it has been over four weeks, please contact the JUT department by clicking here or selecting Contact under the About menu above.

To receive credit for classes taken outside of A&J Training Trust, you need to submit a JUT credit request form. If approved, it may take up to 7 business days to process the request. Note: Some JUT credit requests require approval or denial from the JUT Committee. JUT credit requests requiring JUT Committee approval are subject to the schedule of JUT Committee meetings and may take longer to approve or deny. For any classes taken through your contractor ensure your contractor submitted a JUT credit request form to the JUT Department. Once received it may take up to 7 business days to process the JUT credit request form. Note: Some JUT credit requests require approval or denial from the JUT Committee. JUT credit requests requiring JUT Committee approval are subject to the schedule of JUT Committee meetings and may take longer to approve or deny. 

The Certification Incentive was established to encourage the self-pursuit of certifications. The maximum reimbursement for each eligible member is $550.00 per calendar year. The recertification examination may be taken computer based. Additional information on how to register is provided in a recertification letter sent out by NITC approximately three months prior to expiration of the certification. NITC strongly suggests taking the recertification exam within three months of the expiration date.

Be aware that while a “grace period” of up to one year after the date of expiration is extended by NITC the individual whose certification has expired is not certified during the grace period. EXPIRED MEANS EXPIRED. Failure to recertify within one year of the certification expiration date will require the individual to take the original examination.

If you qualify, you may renew your Medical Gas Installer certification by taking the 4-hour Medical Gas Renewal class with A&J Training Trust, which includes a proctored exam at the end.

You must complete the brazing portion within 6 months of passing the written portion of the Medical Gas Installer examination to receive your Medical Gas Installer certification from NITC.
